Our Story
We’re Nils and Philip – two friends, and two unapologetic coffee nerds. We first met in Berlin about four years ago, back when most of our days revolved around finding new cafés, trying every espresso we could get our hands on, and arguing about flavor notes. Coffee quickly became more than a hobby – it turned into a shared obsession.
Nils is currently based in Lisbon, where he studies and explores Portugal’s growing specialty scene. His home setup is an ECM Mechanika Slim, which fuels both late-night study sessions and countless dial-ins. Before moving to Lisbon, Nils spent almost three years as a barista at Godshot Coffee Klub in Berlin – one of the city’s pioneers in specialty coffee – where he learned the craft from the inside out.
Philip lives in London, a city buzzing with specialty coffee culture. He became a regular at Godshot while living in Berlin and eventually upgraded his enthusiasm with a VBM Domobar at home. From cafés in Shoreditch to hidden gems in East Berlin, he’s always chasing that next bright, fruity roast.
What started as a private game – sending each other café ratings whenever one of us tried a new spot – slowly grew into something bigger. We realized our notes and scoring system could actually help other coffee lovers, too. That’s how Coffee Metrics was born: a place where we turn sips into scores, with the goal of creating a global, nerd-friendly way to compare cafés.
At heart, we’re not critics – we’re enthusiasts. We love sharing our passion for specialty coffee, whether it’s a world-class espresso in Milan, a flat white in Lisbon, or a hidden gem in Berlin. And we believe the journey to find the best coffee is just as exciting as the cup itself.
